 THE PAST

Taito is the daughter of two amazing men, Liam Hawkins and Jamie Taito, though the latter only in spirit. Liam and Jamie had been married for years and living in a two bedroom apartment in Dank City. They had a pretty sweet set up, but Jamie's dream was to raise a child. Liam, on the other hand, was terrified of it. He was scared he'd break a child or ruin it, no matter how much Jamie told him he'd be an amazing father. They got into a few fights over it, delayed it and delayed it. If Jamie tried to bring it up, Liam would get cagey. Looking back on it now, Liam hates himself for that, because Jamie never did get the chance to live out his dream. Liam didn't know something could hurt as badly as losing Jamie.
But hey! The story obviously gets happier from here. It was a long road of pain, and feeling lost, but once Liam came to the end of it he knew what he wanted to do. If Jamie didn't get the chance to raise a kid, he'd raise one for the both of them, and he'd love the kid enough for two. And after a long, long road of paperwork he got the chance. At the age of six, Taito Hawkins was adopted into the Hawkins family.
Yes, there were blunders that came with anyone's first time raising a child, and even more that came with being a single parent, but Liam was a damn good dad. He switched shifts at his job so he could spend his days looking after Taito, he raised Taito to know Jamie as well as someone could know a person they'd never met, he raised her with all the love in his heart, and he raised a girl who was kind, joyful, took no shit, and tried to find hope even in the worst situations. Though... that second to last part got her into some trouble.
She was an energetic child and had a passion for sports, especially baseball, and Liam was happy to enter her in the local girl's softball team to start. As Taito grew up, girl's softball became the local full-fledged baseball team. She was a great batter, strong arms, fast legs, and nothing but determination. Not to mention the team was great! Except for one person. The team's second baseman, who hated Taito with a firey passion for some reason. Taito didn't know, and she didn't ask. She just wanted to avoid them at all costs. Which doesn't work out all that well when you're on the same team. It all came to a head at the end of a long trip home after an away game. This may come as a shock, but sitting on a cramped, hot, noisy bus together for hours upon hours doesn't exactly help interpersonal relationships. A bit of a fight broke out. A lot of a fight broke out. They'd squabbled before, they'd had fights that had been broken up quickly and without incident. This one was not a squabble. This one involved a lot of screaming, the second baseman getting sent home with a black eye, and Taito getting kicked off the team. Apparently "I was sick of taking her shit" is not an adequate explanation for punching someone in the face. Who'd've thunk it.
Without baseball, Taito was a bundle of raw energy. She didn't have anything to do. She'd run for miles and still feel an itch, she needed something that required a real push. And on a run through town, she found it while watching the skatepark. She watched another kid, a little older than her, surf over cement on a longboard. It was graceful curves and sharp edges, it was gorgeous precision and Taito wanted in on it.
Needless to say she kind of sucked ass at it at first, but practice makes progress. Lots and lots of practice. But practice gave her a chance to make connections, specifically connections with the gang. By the time she'd gotten good at longboarding, she was already a member.

When the aliens invaded, Taito decided to look back on what her dad had taught her... Take no shit. And hey, it gave her a use for her old bat and gave her a new and exciting way to scratch that itch for activity.
